Casa dell'Angelo lies in the Lucca's historical
centre, just between the tree-lined Piazza Napoleone (Napoleon's
sister ruled here briefly) and the splendid Romanesque church
of San Michele. This part of the city is largely pedestrianised,
a winding maze of mediæval lanes, little squares, churches
and palaces, all within the monumental city walls.
In spite of its increasing popularity as a
holiday destination, Lucca has managed to retain a lively,
lived-in feel: this is a real, bustling Italian city with
houses and offices tucked in with the restaurants, boutiques
and delicatessen.
The bars are busy and friendly, and there
is a lively social scene of pop concerts, opera and theatre
as well as an international comic festival. The city hosts
a variety of craft, produce and antique markets and has a
regular diet of pageants and processions.
Lucca makes a great holiday base in Tuscany,
with motorway links and fast, frequent bus and rail services.
The railway station is less than 10 minutes' walk and you
can be in Pisa or on the beaches of Viareggio in half an hour.
A train to Florence will take about an hour or you can take
the scenic rail trip northwards into the Apuan Alps.
The vacation accommodation at Casa dell'Angelo
Guesthouse consists of four stylishly decorated rooms in a
recently refurbished apartment. There are two double bedrooms
with private bathrooms (EURO €57-67 per night), a double
with communal bathroom (€40-52) and a triple with communal
bathroom (€57-67). An extra bed is available in the triple
room for an additional €10-13. Please check prices and
details on the rates page.
Although (in common with most Italian guesthouses) breakfast
is not supplied, there are numerous local bars where you can
pick up a pastry and a coffee.
